The Light is from Below (EP)

nayeem_m Crushing and oppressive in the best possible way. It’s not just towering heaviness though - versatile songwriting give these songs depth. Tastefully placed light moments only make the inevitable kick in the teeth hit harder. You won't be disappointed. PS love the guitar tone. Raw and gutteral but warm and alive too. Favorite track: Vacant Mass.

Sleeping Villager Wow, given the crazy good press this lil' EP has received, I'm surprised to be the first bandcamp comment! In any case: Grim Ravine play some truly stellar sludge. It's throaty, it's mean, and it feels like it was dragged through gravel en route to my earholes. The best sludge carries itself with a broad-shouldered confidence, and Grim Ravine have absolutely nailed that vibe. Highly recommended! Favorite track: Vacant Mass.

J. Wukotich Damn! Highly destructive DOOM! Not much else you need to know, to be honest. Fucking fantastic! Favorite track: Hypernova.
Hayduke X

Hayduke X Sludgy death doom, like drowning in a murky, slime coated swamp in the depths of a dark cavern deep beneath the site of a toxic waste dump. This is the way this style is meant to be played. Favorite track: Shrine of Misery.

"Grim Ravine's doom is more like a glacier leaving a canyon in its wake. Then they fill that canyon with misanthropy, amplifier feedback, and a few shit-tons of fossilized misery, prowling somewhere in the wasteland between Bongripper's black-resin doom and Iron Monkey's least forgiving sludge" Decibel Magazine

Excerpts from Reviews:

“Thanks Grim Ravine. You are an anomaly in it's purest definition. I can't describe your sounds succinctly enough to give them their due justice or proper praise. For me, that's probably the best compliment I can give.” The Sludgelord

"The Light is from Below is a killer from start to finish. The songwriting is far above par and the band doesn’t overstay their welcome. If you’re a slave to the sludge, there’s no excuse for missing out on Grim Ravine. They’ve got that “it,” “they” and “them” that every paranoid schizophrenic sludge band needs to sound authentic." “The result is an album that closes in around you, a base mix of doom and sludge at its core but with an engorging cloud of darkness that ensures you're keyed in, taken in for the ride. Allied to a fair heft, there's a fair chance this is what you'll be looking for in sludge in these times, and even if not, you may have no choice but to submit.” Ninehertz

"Grim Ravine plays a musical style that takes atmospheric doom metal and sludge and mixes them together to create a sound of their own, the production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover dark themes. In my opinion Grim Ravine are a very great sounding atmospheric sludge metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album." Doomed to Darkness

"The Light Is From Below hits hard and is likely to strike a chord with even hardened sludge fans. Grim Ravine have a focussed take on caustic, throaty sludge/doom with all the other genre nuances you’d expect from an extreme metal release in 2017. Where the record lays off it manages to maintain momentum; you never feel that they’re trying to play the post-metal card to score “mature” extreme metal points. This is probably the greatest strength of Grim Ravine; they’re never black-and-white, but their departure is only expressed in the darkest grey imaginable." The Monolith

"Grim Ravine couple almost idyllic scenes with a destructive wave that emanates from below the middle register as the riffs hide under a veil of moonlight cutting and searing all that dives beneath the sonic foliage. While lurking in the dankness lies the guttural thrall of a monstrous entity." 8/10 Soundscape Magazine
